En 1737 se publica la “Arquitettura Civile del padre D. Guarino Guarini, Opera postuma dedicata a sua Sacre Reale Maesta”. Se trata de una obra póstuma de Guarino Guarini (1624-1683). Guarini estudia las bóvedas que se forman a partir del cilindro; del cono y de la esfera. Son dibujos esquemáticos, en los que se muestran los diferentes arcos que intervienen, así como los puntos significativos de las mismas. Analiza el modo de ‘extender’, sobre un plano, una superficie esférica seccionada por círculos paralelos. Acomete la obtención de desarrollos aproximados de la superficie esférica que serán útiles para la obtención de las plantillas que utilizarán los canteros.
